INFO
The twin islands of
Daman and Diu are known for their beaches, forts, churches and
exotic liquors. Lying on the edge of the southern borders of
Gujarat, in western India, the co-existence of ancient forts and
churches with the pubs of today, creates a strange ambience of
nostalgia and pleasure in this Union Territory.
SIGHTSEEING
MOTI DAMAN FORT
Fort of Moti Daman is a formidable fortress on the river Daman Ganga.
The fort was built in the second half of the 16th century and is spread
over 30,000 sq m. The fort is basically polygonal in plan. A large
number of Portuguese gentry and their families reside within the Fort.
The inscription above the southern (land) gate mentions that this gate
along with the bastions adjacent to it was completed in 1581 AD after
the Mughal invasion in Akbar's reign.
CHURCH OF BOM JESUS
This early 17th century church dedicated to Bom Jesus is one of the most
impressive holy places in Daman. It was completed in the present form in
1603 and is a living tribute to the excellence the Portuguese architects
and artisans had achieved. A ornate and intricate church building , the
richly carved doorway and the highly decorated interiors, with lofty
ceiling invite aesthetic attention. There are six finely made statues in
the best traditions of Roman church art and architecture.
